Scream--X Drabble
Scream

Rating:PG

Author's Notes:Earlier this year, I wrote a story about X gazing at himself in a mirror, and being enamored by his appearance. Within that story was X remembering about when he was in Crystal Snail's fortress. Scream is that story only expanded. TBH, Scream isn't that bad of a story, but I'm always my biggest critic. There is going to be something wrong with my stories. Consider this story, as it is written, the beta. I wish I could've done more with the mirror aspect, but I think that's reserved for the original story (which will be up on this journal by the end of this year.) At least I can say I made my self-imposed deadline. Comments? You know what to do.

At a swift speed, X slid down the steep slope, landing on the reflective floor of Crystal Snail’s cave fortress. X’s boots echoed as it slammed on the ground. He stood straight, observing his surroundings. The place was peaceful at the moment, the air cold and dense. The temperature: a chilly 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Blocks of crystal and rocks formed weird shapes and angles as they glittered underground. X closed his eyes, and let out a sigh. His sigh condensed in the air.

Such a beautiful place, he thought, how can Crystal Snail desecrate this place by making it his hangout?

X didn’t have time to think of an answer as he raced towards an upward slope just as an incoming green bolder slid down. He climbed up a ladder above him, and watched the green bolder break through the delicate crystal barriers. A protector robot, detecting X climbing down the ladder, quickly fired a small plasma shot. A strong charge of X’s buster destroyed the menace, but he soon discovered more robots of the like. He continued to fire more charged buster shots. The mangled robots fell to the ground, one by one, shattering into pieces. X blocked the glass shrapnel as he advanced towards Crystal Snail’s lair.

X reached a section of the cave where the walls around him were made of polished rocks, so polished that the rocks resembled fun house mirrors. Stagmites decorated the ceiling dropping countless water droplets one of which landed beside X’s boots. Blocks of crystal scattered randomly throughout. In front of X, a robot let out a plasma shot. X charged his buster to the highest capacity and destroyed it. The force of the maximum charged X buster shot cracked the surface of crystalline walls, the indented imprint of the shot left behind.

X paused. His face paled at the sight of the needless destruction, his green eyes dilated. He slowly lowered his X buster as his breathing became fierce. His eyes focused on the broken crystal, studying every crack and indentation. Surrounding the charred imprint, the crystal around it shattered into sharp angles, distorting his face in all directions like abstract art.

Without hesitation, X walked over to the destruction he created. His boots further crushed the glass outer shell remains of the robot he just destroyed, its painful sound magnified. He was only a few feet away from the crystalline wall. His right hand felt the cut surface as he let it graze an edge. His finger pricked on one of the sharp edges. A drop of fluid oozed from his finger. X rubbed the liquid between his fingers. He looked at his scattered image, his green eyes staring back at him, berating his actions.

What have I done?

X closed his eyes. How could he destroy something so pure, something that took nature hundreds of years to create? All destroyed by X’s zealous shots. X took a look at his image again, and walked away from the wall. His eyes welt up with light tears. How dare look at himself after what he did? How could he be so careless? One hand touched his helmet, his eyes closed. A harsh breath emanated from his lips. A tear slid down his cheek. As his eyes opened, he saw himself this time on a pristine wall. He closed his eyes again. X wanted to avoid looking at his image, but no matter where he looked his reflection was there.

An awful feeling of guilt grew inside of X, the kind of guilt he felt during the start of the Maverick wars. He felt responsible for all of the troubles plaguing the world. By disrupting the delicate nuances of nature, X destroyed something that was defenseless to the Maverick attacks. What did nature deserve to be destroyed? His hand clutched his chest. He fell to his knees. The pain of what he did was unbearable. His breathing became irregular. The coolness of the ground caressed his lower legs, comforting it like a blanket. X meditated for a few moments all the while reciting the following:

Keep going…Keep going…

Breathing harshly, X lowered his head, the multiple witnesses on the walls looking down at him. X lifted his head up as he silently recited a few words perhaps searching for a divine sign. Moving on seemed liked the hardest task in the world, but he stood up. He looked at the path ahead of him. His face became stoic. He took one last look at this reflection. For a moment, a pained look was on his face before it became a face of courage. He climbed up the walls and continued on his mission.
